Invest In Our Youth To Invest Our Future 

Foster Care Awareness Month is a time to celebrate powerful success stories from former foster youth and the hard work they put in along the way.   

We are doing our part to amplify the voices of those in foster care, and we hope you’ll join us. Read more about Job Corps grad Robert Gagnon and learn how Job Corps can work with you to support other young people and start their journey.  

Robert was reluctant to join Job Corps at first. He just wanted to graduate from high school and go to college like all his peers. His foster parents encouraged him to give it a shot after hearing about it through their connections in foster care and social work.   

Robert agreed and was very happy with his Job Corps experience.   

At Job Corps, Robert studied Culinary Arts and served as Student Government Association secretary at Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center. The staff at Ford voted unanimously to award Robert with a Medal of Merit award from U.S. Rep. Justin Amash for all he did for others.   

Robert later studied Advanced Culinary Arts and served as SGA vice president at Treasure Island Job Corps Center. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he works as an aviation electronics technician on base in San Diego.

we invest in the future. 

As a residential program, Job Corps offers someone transitioning out of foster care the opportunity to train for a career in one of the nation’s fastest-growing industries, such as health care, construction and renewable resources.  

With support from our instructors, career counselors and staff members, students can finish their high school education, complete career training, learn employability skills and work with a career counselor to find a job after graduation—all for free.  

While they’re preparing for their future, students will have a safe place to sleep, nutritious meals to fuel them throughout the day and a regular allowance.

Help them get started:

• Learn about Job Corps’ eligibility requirements and the option to enroll virtually.
• Encourage them to fill out an Enrollment Interest Form to be put in touch with an admissions counselor.

Our local admissions counselors will support them every step of the way through the process.
