As summer kicks into high gear and temperatures rise across the country, so does activity on many Job Corps campuses. Check out some of the program’s summer highlights and how students are making the most of their time on campus.

Tesla discovers what Job Corps is all about

Tesla representatives recently paid a visit to Gary Job Corps in San Marcos, Texas, to learn more about Job Corps' career training programs and see firsthand the real-world experience and industry certifications students receive from their training. As Tesla prepares to staff its Gigafactory in Austin (a manufacturing hub for the Model Y and future home of the CyberTruck), the company is in need of a pipeline of future employees who are highly skilled and ready to work.

While on campus, Tesla employees toured the Gary center’s Machining and Material Handling career training areas, where they saw in-person demonstrations and spoke with students and instructors about how Job Corps’ training curriculum can help prepare current and future students for modern automotive and clean energy companies such as Tesla.

National Director Rachel Torres made the trip to Texas and spoke to the Tesla representatives and members from the Texas Workforce Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration about Job Corps’ role in building careers and strengthening our nation’s workforce.

The event was a success, and there was no question about the students’ level of excitement.

Youth2Youth is back!

As Job Corps alumni, you may remember Job Corps’ student-led Youth2Youth initiative that was initially created to help raise awareness about and prevent youth violence. Now Y2Y is back, and it’s even bigger than before.

In June, Job Corps National Director Rachel Torres helped students relaunch Youth2Youth: Awareness. Action. Accountability. on the Potomac campus in Washington, D.C. Y2Y aims to raise awareness about the importance of student mental health and empowers students to combat violence and drug use on all Job Corps campuses.

At the Potomac kickoff event, students shared personal stories about how these issues have affected their lives and then participated in a group activity to sign pledge cards committing to Y2Y’s awareness, action and accountability goals. The event finished with students marching up Potomac’s well-known Panther Hill and spray painting the Y2Y logo at the top of the hill.

Be on the lookout for more information about how Y2Y Student Ambassadors are leading this nationwide initiative on their own campuses.

Job Corps connections last a lifetime. New Haven Job Corps Center celebrated three of their employees—all Job Corps alums—during an Alumni Meet and Greet on campus. The three reflected on their journey as students and strategized for future events to bring alumni to the campus and inspire students just starting their own Job Corps journey.
